Description
The Sour Sop is only harvested on Sundays at the last moment. Unripe fruits do not ripen, so only fully developed fruits can be harvested! Usually 50% of the fruits already start to ripen / soften overnight and can therefore no longer be sent.
Background
The Sour Sop (also guanábana fruit) is often called Mexican Sapote or “Sour Sop” in English. In Sinhala it is called “Katu Anoda”.
The tree (Guanábana), which is up to 8 meters high, is evergreen and has only a little branched crown. The fruit is actually a large berry and is eaten fresh. Because it is very sensitive to pressure and suddenly ripens, transportation is very difficult. It tastes best when eaten soft straight from the tree.
In Ayurvedic medicine, the sour sop is known for its bladder and kidney cleansing properties.
Taste and texture
The taste is refreshingly sweet and lemony. The juicy, slightly cottony and at the same time creamy consistency is an experience of a special kind. Large, black seeds sit in the soft, white flesh. The outer skin is covered with soft spines. The fruits are up to 40 centimeters long and can weigh up to four kilograms.
Ready to eat
The fruit should be soft everywhere and give way easily at the touch of a finger. If some parts are still hard, wait a little longer, because the pulp does not taste when still hard. If the skin already turns brownish-black, the taste is usually still okay, but slowly changes. The perfect fruit is green from the outside and snow white from the inside with black seeds.
When ripe, the sour sop exudes a very pleasant, lemony scent. One could also say that it smells a bit of strawberry.
Durability
The sour sop is not a fruit that can be stored for a long time. It should be harvested to maturity and then enjoyed as soon as it becomes soft. We send the fruits so that they arrive ripe. Most of the time, the fruits must be eaten immediately on the day of arrival, otherwise they will become bad.
Ripe fruit should therefore be eaten quickly, but should be kept in the refrigerator for 1-2 days if necessary, although the taste quality will of course decrease.
How do I eat a Sour Sop?
The easiest way is to cut the fruit in half lengthways and then cut it into handy pieces. The skin and the seeds are inedible. The latter are difficult to remove from the pulp. It is best to “sort out” in the mouth like with cherries and then spit it out.
By the way, the stalk in the middle of the fruit is edible and tastes wonderful when needed.
