How is the taste of the banana “Ambul”?
The banana tastes lemony-sweet and is a welcoming change from the “Banana Sini”. The skin is a bit smoother and less matt. I love all bananas! If one gets boring the other one is interesting again 😉 The “Banana Ambul” is just like the “Banana Sini” an apple banana. It is also known as a fig-apple-banana.
The Banana Ambul is always refreshing and lively in taste.
In contrast to the “Banana Sini”, the Banana Ambul is not so good for sweetening or drying and also not for banana ice cream or sorbet. We always liked to use it in fruit salad and it is also delicious when it is pure.
As I said, the ambul banana is refreshingly different and one of my favorite fruits in Sri Lanka.
Time of harvest and transportation of bananas:
The banana tree is harvested as soon as one or more bananas are completely yellow and can already be eaten. Now the bananas have developed their full physical ripeness and only have to ripen all. This usually happens starting from the top and steadily downwards, but it can also be different, as in the photo below, if a banana ripens at the bottom first. Sending yellowish bananas, however, makes no sense either for taste reasons or for transport reasons!
We therefore always send all bananas grass green and still hard! Sounds bad, but as long as they are bananas from a tree that has been harvested ripe, it has nothing to do with the taste quality! It would be fatal to send the bananas more mature, because then they would arrive with transport damage and already black spots. Bananas ripen absolutely safely. It is only important that they are harvested at the right moment and transported very carefully. At least one banana must be ripe when harvested!
If the banana tree has been harvested before the first banana fruit is yellow, you can tell immediately! They don’t taste as good as tree-ready specimens.
In order to enjoy a banana straight from the tree, you also have to accept losses because the squirrels, bats, birds and other small animals and rodents are also interested. Not to forget the monkeys or wild boars, which sometimes knock over a banana tree.
